Textbook: The textbook for the course is Elementary Analysis: The Theory of Calculus by Kenneth A. Ross (Springer, 2003). We will follow it more or less closely. We will cover roughly Chapters 1 to 5, and also Chapter 6 if we have time.

Course Description:   Analysis  is "calculus with proofs", roughly speaking. In this course we will study the foundations of real analysis. Topics include continuity, convergence of sequences and series of numbers, convergence of sequences and series of functions, and Riemann integral. An ability to read and write proofs will be stressed. A precise knowledge of definitions is essential. Throughout the class, strong emphasis will be put on writing rigorous mathematical proofs. Homework solutions should be written in complete sentences. Mathematical writing should respect all the rules of grammatical English.

Homework: Homework problems will be assigned from the textbook or additional problem sets, will be collected each Thursday (due 5pm), and selected problems will be graded about twice a week. It can be very useful to discuss your homework assignments with other students in the class. However, please make sure the final write-up is done on your own. One lowest homework score will be dropped.

Quizzes and Final Exam: There will be 5 (20 minute in-class or take-home) quizzes, 1 (in-class) midterm exam (March 3) and 1 final exam (May 4, 8:30-11:30am). Exams may have a take-home component. Make-up exams are only possible in the case of a documented medical excuse, a university-sanctioned absence (e.g., participation in a varsity sporting event), or a family emergency. Please contact me at the earliest time possible to schedule a make-up.

Grading: Homework: 33% (3% each, drop lowest), Quizzes: 20% (4% each), Midterm Exam: 15%, Final Exam: 32%. You can track your scores from Blackboard website. The letter grade is assigned using the scale:

A > 94 > A- > 91 > B+ > 88 > B > 84 > B- > 81> C+ > 78 > C > 73 > C- > 70 > D+ > 67 > D > 63 > D- > 60 > F

Honor Code: Students will uphold William and Mary's stated honor code as it is written, any infractions will be referred to the Honor Council.
